Artists Statement
I've been interested in boats and the sea for as long as I can remember. I have no desire to sail anywhere in particular other than simply to enjoy the symbiosis between the boat, wind and water and being a part of that, so its probably not surprising that I am drawn towards working sail, a practical sailing rig to provide power and stability whilst working at sea.
Working as a photographer I find water and light a combination that never disappoints, always changing never dull. A contrasting world of light and dark where colour seems superfluous, a world in which the boats themselves often appear anchored only by the shadows they cast on the water.
Virtually all of the pictures displayed were taken with a Nikon D2X camera and Nikon lenses. They are printed on an Epson 7800 inkjet printer.
People often ask if the pictures have been digitally enhanced, to which the answer is no more so than had I used a particular developer or paper combination in the darkroom.
I strive to create images that are as realistic as possible using my own profiles to get the best out of the camera, ink and paper combinations.
