In 1956 this hindmost fleet of the age of sail gathered together to mark the end of an era and to promote the future of sail training, it was so successful that it went on to become an annual event and inspire the building of many new vessels.

Class
Tall Ship Rating
Class A
LOA: 40m or more.
This is the largest group and includes all Square Rigged ships and all other vessels over 40m
Class B
All traditionally rigged vessels.
LOA: Less than 40m
LWL: At least 9.14m.
Class C
All vessels with a modern rig usually Bermudan but no spinnaker sails.
LOA: Less than 40m
LWL: At least 9.14m.
Class D
All vessels with a modern rig usually Bermudan but they also have a spinnaker or similar foresail.
LOA: Less than 40m
LWL: At least 9.14m.


LOA = Length over all.
LWL = Length over the water line.
